    A mechatronic approach to supernormal auditory localisation

    Remote audio perception is a fundamental requirement for telepresence and teleoperation in applications that range from work in hostile environments to security and entertainment. The following paper presents the use of a mechatronic system to test the efficacy of audio for telepresence. It describes work to determine whether the use of supernormal inter-aural distance is a valid means of approaching an enhanced method of hearing for telepresence. The particular audio variable investigated is the azimuth angle of error and the construction of a dedicated mechatronic test rig is reported and the results obtained. The paper concludes by observing that the combination of the mechatronic system and supernormal audition does enhance the ability to localise sound sources and that further work in this area is justified

    Challenges and implications of routine depression screening for depression in chronic disease and multimorbidity: a cross sectional study

    <b>Background</b> Depression screening in chronic disease is advocated but its impact on routine practice is uncertain. We examine the effects of a programme of incentivised depression screening in chronic disease within a UK primary care setting.<p></p> <b>Methods and Findings</b> Cross sectional analysis of anonymised, routinely collected data (for 2008-9) from family practices in Scotland serving a population of circa 1.8 million. Patients registered in primary care with at least one of three chronic diseases, coronary heart disease, diabetes and stroke, underwent incentivised depression screening using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Score (HADS). <p></p> 125143 patients were identified with at least one chronic disease. 10670 (8.5%) were under treatment for depression and exempt from screening. Of the remaining, HADS were recorded for 35537 (31.1%) patients. 7080 (19.9% of screened) had raised HADS (≥8); the majority had indications of mild depression with a HADS between 8 and 10. Over 6 months, 572 (8%) of those with a raised HADS (≥8) were initiated on antidepressants, while 696 (2.4%) patients with a normal HADS (<8) were also initiated on antidepressants (relative risk of antidepressant initiation with raised HADS 3.3 (CI 2.97-3.67), p value <0.0001). Of those with multimorbidity who were screened, 24.3% had a raised HADS (≥8). A raised HADS was more likely in females, socioeconomically deprived, multimorbid or younger (18-44) individuals. Females and 45-64 years old were more likely to receive antidepressants.<p></p> <b>Limitations</b> – retrospective study of routinely collected data.<p></p> <b>Conclusions </b> Despite incentivisation, only minority of patients underwent depression screening, suggesting that systematic depression screening in chronic disease can be difficult to achieve in routine practice. Targeting those at greatest risk such as the multimorbid or using simpler screening methods may be more effective. Raised HADS was associated with a higher number of new antidepressant prescriptions which has significant resource implications. The clinical benefits of such screening remain uncertain and merit investigation

    Microspectroscopy and Imaging in the THz Range Using Coherent CW Radiation

    A novel THz near-field spectrometer is presented which allows to perform biological and medical studies with high spectral resolution combined with a spatial resolution down to l/100. In the setup an aperture much smaller than the used wavelength is placed in the beam very close to the sample. The sample is probed by the evanescent wave behind the aperture. The distance is measured extremely accurate by a confocal microscope. We use monochromatic sources which provide powerful coherent cw radiation tuneable from 50 GHz up to 1.5 THz. Transmission and reflection experiments can be performed which enable us to study solids and molecules in aqueous solution.     Interaction between surface structures and tunnelling in sand: Centrifuge and computational modelling

    Tunnelling in urban areas requires a careful estimation of the consequence of soil settlements on existing buildings. In this paper the interaction between the excavation of a tunnel in sand and surface structures is investigated. A two dimensional finite element model is presented and validated through comparison with centrifuge test results, both with and without structures. The model is then used to perform a sensitivity study on the effect of building weight on soil movements and structural deformations. The results of the validation indicate that assuming a no-tension interface between the soil and the structure is essential to capture the soil-structure interaction that was experimentally observed. The parametric analyses show that the relation between the building stiffness and the tunnelling-induced deformations depends on the building weight.Financial support was provided by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council of the United Kingdom, under grant reference number EP/K018221/1.This is the final version of the article.     Liquid Metal Sources in Ion Microscopy and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry

    This paper reports on state-of-the-art developments in liquid metal sources and some of the finer points of their operating characteristics that are especially relevant to the satisfactory functioning of analytical ion scanning microscopes equipped with secondary ion mass spectrometers. Such effects include unwanted emissions from the source and their exclusion by means of filters and mass separators in the ion-optical column. The design of the ion-optical column is also discussed and some applications of this rapidly advancing form of analytical microscopy are described

    Ultra-Rare BRD9 Loss-of-Function Variants Limit the Antiviral Action of Interferon

    The human type I interferon (IFN) system is central to innate immune defense, and is essential to protect individuals against severe viral disease. Consequently, genetic disruption of IFN signaling or effector mechanisms is extremely rare, as affected individuals typically suffer life-threatening infections at an early age. While loss-of-function (LOF) mutations in canonical JAK-STAT signaling genes (such as IFNAR2, TYK2, STAT1, STAT2 and IRF9) have previously been characterized, little is known about the consequences of mutations in other human factors required for IFN signaling. Here, we studied the impact of rare human genetic variants in the recently identified contributor to IFN-stimulated gene expression and antiviral activity, bromodomain-containing protein 9 (BRD9). Using a cell-based BRD9 knock-out and reconstitution model system, we functionally assessed 12 rare human BRD9 missense variants predicted to impair protein function, as well as 3 ultra-rare human BRD9 LOF variants that lead to truncated versions of BRD9. As compared to wild-type BRD9, none of the 12 BRD9 missense variants affected the ability of exogenous IFN to limit virus replication. In contrast, all 3 truncated BRD9 LOF variants failed to allow exogenous IFN to function efficiently, as evidenced by exacerbated replication of an IFN-sensitive virus and diminished IFN-stimulated gene expression. Thus, while no homozygous BRD9 LOF carriers have yet been identified, our results predict that such extremely rare individuals would exhibit a compromised ability to mount a fully protective IFN-mediated antiviral response. Genetic variation in BRD9 could be considered in future studies to understand the infection susceptibility of some individuals

    The Community Order and the Suspended Sentence Order: The views and attitudes of sentencers

    On 4 April 2005 two new sentences for adults aged 18 and above became available to the courts in England and Wales: the Community Order and the Suspended Sentence Order (SSO). Both sentences are intended to narrow the custody/community divide, and therefore are important factors for the development of the National Offender Management Service (NOMS). Both are also intended to offer more robust, demanding and credible alternatives to short custodial sentences, thereby contributing to reductions in the prison population which, at 16 May 2008, stood at 82,682.1 Both should be served in the community and both have the same number of requirements available. Essentially, the Community Order is a restructuring of what were the available community sentences – the Community Rehabilitation Order (CRO), the Community Punishment Order (CPO), the Community Punishment and Rehabilitation Order (CPRO), the Drug Treatment and Testing Order (DTTO), the Curfew Order and the Attendance Centre Order – and the various conditions that could be attached to the CRO and the CPRO. The SSO, on the other hand, can be seen as an attempt to revive the old-style suspended sentence by adding conditions to it
